I thought for today`s blog we could talk about things related to summer.
暑いですねーーーー。みなさん楽しい夏休みをお過ごしですか？
暑さに負けてませんか？
今回は夏に関することを色々お話ししてみたいと思います。
Have you been drinking much mugicha lately?
I love mugicha, but in America we don`t have it.
People usually drink iced tea or lemonade in the summer instead of mugicha.
In the south part of the United States where I`m from people drink sweet tea
(tea with sugar already added) or unsweet tea (tea with no sugar).
麦茶飲んでますか？僕は麦茶大好き。でもアメリカにはないです。残念
アイスティーかレモネードを夏の間はよく飲みますね。
僕の出身アメリカ南部の夏の飲み物といえばアイスティー。
既に砂糖で味付てしてある甘いものかシュガーフリーのものがあります。
Are your children on summer break now?
In America summer break is different in different places,
but usually it is around 3 months.
During that time children often go to different kinds of summer camp.
お子さんは夏休み中ですか？
アメリカの学校の夏休みは地域差はありますが大体三か月程あるのが普通です。
その間子どもたちは色々なキャンプに参加します。
When I bring our garbage to the garbage center I have to walk through a park.
Lately when I bring the garbage I am attacked by せみ from all directions.
せみ in English is cicada. We have cicadas in America too, but not nearly as many.
僕はごみを出しに行くとき、
公園を抜けていくのですが最近よくせみが僕めがけて飛んできます。
ぶつかってくるのです。英語ではcicadaと言います。
アメリカにもいるかって？いるのですがこんなに色々な種類のせみはいません。
One thing we don`t have in America is ゆかた.
Since we don`t have them you can just write yukata in English.
I still can`t tie a yukata belt.
One thing you should keep in mind about using Japanese nouns like yukata
in English is that they follow Japanese grammar rules and are always uncountable.
So instead of saying “I have 2 yukatas” you should say “I have 2 yukata.”
アメリカの夏に存在しないものそれは「ゆかた」です。
アメリカにないものなのでそのまま英語でもyukataと書きます。
帯・・難しいですね。僕は自分で締められません。
このような単語を英語表現の中で使う時は
ゆかたが二枚あっても複数形のsはつけません。「I have 2 yukata.」となります。
Have you had shaved ice this summer?
My son Kai loves shaved ice.
Sometimes he gets matcha and sometimes he gets blue Hawaii.
In America blue Hawaii is called blue raspberry.
In New Orleans people call shaved ice snowballs.
My favorite snowball flavor is mint.

アメリカではブルーハワイ味はブルーラズベリーと言います。
僕の出身ニューオリンズではかき氷の事はsnowballsスノーボールズと言います。
僕はミント味のスノーボールズが好きですね。
