I`ve lived in Japan for a number of years now, so I feel like I finally understand most of the world around me.
However, there are a few things that remain a mystery to me about Japan. The world is a very magical, mysterious place, and that is usually a good thing. However, these particular mysteries—which are all about very unimportant things–really bother me for some reason.
So if you can help me solve any of these mysteries I would appreciate your help, and if not I hope you at least learn a few new words.
日本に何年も滞在し、ついに！僕も僕の周りで起こっていることが（大体）わかるようになってきました。
でもいまだにわからないことも幾つかあります。この世界は不思議で未知なる謎に満ちています。くだらないことですが、僕も日々疑問に思っていることがあります。いつも頭の片隅にあり僕を悩ませるのです。
そう、もしあなたが今日このブログを読んで僕の疑問に対する答えを与えてくれたらとても嬉しいし、もし答えがわからなければ、せめて今回のエントリーを読んで、笑ってくれたら、と思います。
Mystery #1:Photographic memory
A few weeks ago my wife and I were watching the American medical drama Grey`s Anatomy (this is our guilty pleasure), and one of the characters in the show has a photographic memory.
Also called eidetic memory, a person who has a photographic memory remembers everything they see, even if they only see it once.
When we were watching the show, the Japanese subtitles said ( 記憶力抜群 ) for photographic memory, which is very different than the meaning of photographic memory.
After the show we looked up photographic memory in about 6 different dictionaries, and it was not in any of them. Does photographic memory not exist in Japan, or is there just not a word for it?
先日僕は妻と二人で「グレイズアナトミー」というアメリカのテレビドラマを見ていました。
（僕と妻のguilty pleasureです。Guiltyは罪、pleasureは快楽、つまり罪深き楽しみ、やましい楽しみということですね。人に表立っては言えないような楽しみということです。とてもよくつかわれる表現です。ちなみに、訳者のguilty pleasureは息子が寝た後に、ネットで芸能人のゴシップ記事を読みながら、お酒を飲みながら、チョコレートを食べることです。（←guiltyすぎ）
さて、グレイズアナトミーの話に戻りましょう。
登場人物の一人が「photographic memory」を持っているのです。 （「eidetic memory」ともいいます。）
この特徴を持った人物は見たものすべてを記憶します。例え、見たものがたったの一度、でもです。
ドラマを見ていて、その時の字幕は「記憶力抜群」となっていました。
これはphotographic memoryの実際の意味とは大きく異なります。ドラマを見終わった後に妻と二人で何種類もの辞書で日本語訳を探しました。が、これといった訳を見つけることはできませんでした。
何で？
photographic memoryを持つ人物は日本にいないのか、それとも、ただ単に言葉がないだけなのでしょうか？
ブライアンの原文を訳し終わった後、再度調べてみました。
日本語訳は、直観像記憶、または映像記憶というのが近いと思います。 記憶力が「良い」のではなく、見たものを写真で写したように正確に記憶できる能力のことです。
なんと、人間においては幼少期にこの能力は普通に見られ、通常は思春期以前に消失するものだそうです。成人後も、映像記憶能力を保ち続ける者がわずかにいるようです。
日本人でも著名人で
- 花村萬月 – 作家。
- 七田眞 – 右脳開発の提唱者。
- 黒柳徹子 – 女優・タレント。
- 畑正憲-タレント。
などがこのphotographic memoryを持っているそうです。
作家の谷崎潤一郎さんもそうで、名を知らぬ祇園の料亭に行った翌日、ある人から電話で昨日は祇園のどこだったかと訊かれ「ちょっとお待ちください」と考え、一瞬仰ぎ見た料亭の軒灯に書かれた文字を思い出し、正確に返答した事がある。
などという逸話が残っているようです。
他には、音楽家が楽譜を目で見て、そのまま記憶するというのはよくあることのようです。
そして、ブライアンの親友もこのphotographic memoryを持っているそうです。読んだ本の内容をそのまま記憶して忘れない彼は、現在、医師として活躍しています。
いずれにしてもアメリカでは誰もがこの言葉、事象を知っているということ（ブライアン談）を考えると、日本での認知度と比べると大きな違いがあるのが興味深いところです。
Mystery #2:
I try to always bring my water bottle with me wherever I go, as I don`t like buying PET bottles of water, but sometimes I forget my water bottle and I end up buying a bottle of water.
When I do buy a bottle of water, I usually buy the apple いろはす water. My son also quite likes this water. The label says that the water has apple extract (エキス), but the liquid is completely clear (透明).
How is this possible if there is apple extract added?
僕はいつもマイボトルを持ち歩いているんだけど、たまに忘れます。
忘れたときにはペットボトル飲料を買うんだけど、その時は「いろはす」のりんご味を買います。息子もお気に入りです。 いろはすのボトルにはりんごのエキスが含まれていると書いてあるけど、色は完全な透明です。
何で？
Mystery #3:
Bread is quite different in America and Japan. In Japan, a loaf of bread is much smaller, and the heels the bread aren`t included.
A heel is the slice of bread on both ends of the loaf which is a bit thicker (and usually more unpopular) than the normal slices. I`m surprised that the heels aren`t included in Japan, because there is such a culture of not beingもったいない here. Why aren`t the heels included? And what happens to them in the end?
パンー日米間で大きな違いがあります。 日本で売られているパンはサイズもぐっと小さいし、耳がありません。
「もったいない」の聖地日本で、スーパーで売られているパンに耳がないのは驚くべきことです。
何で？ そして彼ら（耳）はどこへいったのでしょう？
As I mentioned before, these mysteries aren`t about very important things, but sometimes the trivial things in life can be the most interesting things.
