The mornings and evenings are getting cooler.
The swimming pools are now empty.
It`s autumn! Or is it fall?
Both are correct. Autumn is used exclusively in British English.
In American English we usually say fall,
though occasionally autumn is also used.
Being an American English speaker I will use fall for today`s blog,
which is looking at words related to fall.
朝晩涼しさを増していますね。
小学校のプールががらんとしています。
ああ秋です。autumn/オータム？それとも fall/フォール？
どちらも正解です。
Autumnはイギリス英語です。
アメリカ英語では通常Fallを用いますが稀にAutumnを見かけることもあります。
僕はアメリカ英語を話すので今日はここではFallを使っていきたいと思います。
それでは秋にまつわる言葉をいくつか紹介していきましょう。
Spider Lilies—The picture above is a common sight in Japan in the fall.
I usually only see red and white spider lilies in Japan,
but in my hometown of New Orleans
you can see many different colors of spider lilies in the fall.
彼岸花

日本の秋の風物詩ともいえる植物です。
日本では赤と白の彼岸花しか僕は見たことがありませんが
僕の出身ルイジアナ州ニューオリンズではこの秋の季節
様々な色の彼岸花が咲きその美しさを競います。
Persimmon—I know not everyone likes them,
but one of my favorite things about fall in Japan is eating persimmon.
Persimmon are very rare in America. The first time I tried one was in Japan.
Sometimes a person might have a persimmon tree in their garden,
but you can never find them in a supermarket.
柿
柿ー好みは分かれるところだと思いますが、僕は秋が来ると
柿を食べるのが楽しみの一つです。
アメリカではあまり見かけません。
ほとんど認知されていないと言っていいでしょう。
僕が初めて柿を食べたのは日本ででした。
アメリカではごく稀に誰かの庭に柿の木が植えられているのを
見かけることもありますが、スーパーで食用に売られているのを
見ることはありません。
Fall Colors/Fall Leaves—
I know that taking pictures of fall colors is an important pastime in Japan,
but in my hometown the trees are mainly pine trees and oak trees,
so it isn`t very colorful. Other places in America,
like New England, have much more beautiful fall colors.
I remember when I lived in London
being surprised by the beautiful fall colors in the middle of a big city.
紅葉
色づいた木々の葉を写真に収める―日本では秋の季節行事のようなものですね。
悲しいことに僕の出身地では松や樫の木などの針葉樹ばかりだったので
紅葉を楽しむことはできませんでした。
アメリカでもニューイングランドなどでは美しい紅葉を見ることができます。
ロンドンに住んでいた時に
この大都市で街路樹が次々に色づき落ち葉が
道を覆ってしまうようなドラマチックな紅葉
を見たときには感動したものでした。
Autumnal Equinox—
The Autumnal Equinox is the day when the amount of daytime and nighttime is equal.
This also happens in the spring, when it is called the vernal equinox.
秋分
昼と夜の長さが同じ秋分の日はAutumnal Equinox
といい、春分は vernal equinoxといいます。
Halloween—
This is a fun holiday that is usually celebrated in America and Canada,
though it is becoming popular now in other countries too.

楽しい秋のお祭りです。
アメリカ、カナダでお祝いされていましたが
近年世界中で盛り上がりを見せているのは
皆様ご存知の通りです。
