Hip hop is a musical genre that originated in New York City in the 1970s,
and it has now reached all corners of the globe.
I have been listening to hip hop my whole life,
and I still enjoy it just as much as when I was younger.

however, if you are learning English as a second language
hip hop can be one of the most difficult musical genres to understand,
as it is filled with lots of unique words and slang.
I think everyone should enjoy hip hop,
so I thought we could have a look at some hip hop English in our blog today.
でも第二外国語を学ぶ人にとっては
ユニークな言語体系やスラングの多いヒップホップは
理解がとても難しい音楽のジャンルだと思います。
皆にヒップホップを楽しんでほしいと思うので、
今回はヒップホップ特有の表現について書いてみようと思います。
What is hip hop?
And how is it different to rap?
I think the best answer to this question that I have heard is
from Adam Horowitz of the Beastie Boys:
“it`s kind of like the difference between a sommelier and a drunk.”
I think what Adam is trying to say is that anyone can rap,
but to be a hip hop MC you need skill and years of dedicated experience.
Which leads us to our next word…
ヒップホップとは何か？
先ずラップとどう違うのでしょう？
この質問の答えは僕が知りうる限り（米ヒップホップバンドの）
ビースティーボーイズのアダムホロウィッツの言った
「なんていうか、ソムリエと酔っ払い、というような違いだよ。」
というのがベストアンサーだと思います。
アダムが言っているのは
「ラップは誰にでもできる。
でもヒップホップのＭＣになるのはスキルと長い年月が必要だ。」
という意味だと思います。
MC
MC originally stood for master of ceremonies,
which was a person who directed the entertainment at a party or formal event.
This word is also sometimes spelled emcee.
Hip hop changed the acronym MC to stand for “mic controller,”
or person who is in control of the microphone.
Hip hop English almost always uses “mic”—the shortened version of microphone.

オリジナルの意味はマスター・オブ・セレモニーです。
パーティーやフォーマルなイベントを仕切る人の事ですね。
emceeとスペルすることもあります。
そして今やヒップホップは
このＭＣという頭文字の持つ意味をmic controllerに変えるまでになりました。
（micはマイクロフォンの短縮です。）
Yo
Yo is a bit tricky to explain because it doesn`t really have a meaning,
and can be used in so many different situations.
It`s also probably the most common word found in hip hop.
You can use yo to get someone`s attention:
“Yo, Steven come over here.”
You can also use yo to greet someone:
“Yo, Ben how are you doing?”
In hip hop people often use the word to get a crowd excited:
“Yo, yo, yo make some no-ise.”
The first music show dedicated to rap/hip hop was called Yo! MTV Raps.
I watched this show with great devotion when I was younger.
Yo
はっきり言って「これ」と言った意味はないので
説明が難しいですが
ご存知、ヒップホップの中で最もよく使われる言葉です。
誰かの注意を引きたいときに「Yo」と言います。
“Yo, Steven come over here.”
「Yo スティーブンちょっとこっち来いよ。」
挨拶にも使います。
“Yo, Ben how are you doing?”
「ベン、元気？」
盛り上げようという時にオーディエンスの気分が高まるように
“Yo, yo, yo make some no-ise.”
「みんな声あげてー。」と言います。
ヒップホップ初のTV番組は
Yo! MTV Raps
というタイトルでした。
若いころ、僕はこの番組を毎回欠かさず見たものです。
Dope
Outside of the realm of hip hop,
dope could mean: 1) a stupid person 2) a slang word for (various) drugs.
When used in hip hop, dope means cool or awesome.
Def (not to be confused with deaf—a person who can`t hear)
is a similar word used in hip hop. Every adjective always has an opposite…
ヒップホップ王国以外の普通の国では、この
Dopeという言葉は
１．馬鹿な奴
２．種々のドラッグ（スラングとして用いられる）
を意味します。
ヒップホップの曲の中で使われるときはcool or awesome
クール！イケてる！最高！やばい！というような意味合いです。
Def（耳が聞こえない人を表すdeafとは違う意味です。）
という言葉も似た意味を持っています。
そしてどんな形容詞にも反対の意味の形容詞があるように..
Wack
The opposite of dope/def is wack.
If something is wack it is awful or bad.
dope/defにも対になる意味のwackという言葉あります。
最低・最悪という意味です。
