Brand Name Words
Sometimes a word that is commonly used in English is
actually the brand name that was given by the company that makes the product.
For today`s blog entry
let`s look at a few words in English that are actually brand names.
今日のエントリーでは英語で日常的に使われている語句の中で
製品名がそのままその物を表しているようなものを取り上げてみたいと思います。
えー知らなかった。これって会社名なの？
とびっくりしてみてください。
1) Popsicle—The frozen treat in the picture above is a Popsicle brand ice pop
(or “ice lolly” if you are in Australia).
The brand became so popular that people started calling all ice pops “popsicles.”
１．ポプシクル
アイスキャンディーの事です。(写真参照）
この会社のポプシクルというアイスキャンディーがとても有名になり
市場独占状態になってアイスキャンディー（アイスポップというそうです。
ちなみにオーストラリアの場合はアイスローリー）
のことをそのまま商品名ポプシクル、と呼ぶようになったそう。
2) Chap Stick—Chap Stick is a brand name of lip balm made by the Pfizer company.
In America most people call any brand of lip balm
“chap stick (sometimes also written as one word chapstick).”
２、チャップスティック
リップクリームの製品名です。
日本でもおなじみのファイザー製薬の製品です。
アメリカではどこのメーカのものでも人々はチャップスティックと呼びます。
3) Q-Tips—Unilever has made “Q-Tips” cotton swabs to clean ears since 1926.
If you were wondering,
the “Q” stands for quality. That being said,
people generally refer to all cotton swabs as Q-Tips.
３、キューティップス(綿棒）
こちらも日本でもおなじみユニリーバが１９２６年に販売を開始した
綿棒です。頭文字のＱはquality(クオリティ）を表しています。
しかしながらですね、今日では
クオリティの如何にかかわらず人々は綿棒の事は
キューティップスと言うのです。
4) Band Aid—Johnson and Johnson produce these trademarked adhesive bandages.
And let`s face it, Band Aid is much nicer sounding than adhesive bandage.
４、バンドエイド
皆様ご存知ジョンソンアンドジョンソンの製品、絆創膏です。
トレードマークのこの製品、adhesive bandages(粘着包帯）
からバンドエイドと名付けられたようです。
さすが後にこの粘着包帯の代名詞となったバンドエイド、
この方が「粘着包帯」よりも響きがずっと良いと僕は思います。
5) Wite-out—There are many brands of correction fluid,
but Wite-out, produced by the French company Bic,
became so popular that it is now the commonly used term for all brands of correction fluid.
５、ワイトアウト(修正液）
修正液、様々な会社の製品があります。
フランスの文房具大手「Bic」（鬼太郎の目玉のオヤジに似た
マスコットがトレードマーク）
社製の修正液が有名になりどこの会社のものでも「wite-out」と呼ばれるようになりました。
6) Frisbee—“Frisbee” is now a generic term,
but it is also a trademarked term of the Wham-O toy company.
The frisbee was invented by American Fred Morrison in 1937,
who originally called it the “Flyin-Saucer.”
He later sold his invention to Wham-O in 1957,
and it was Wham-O that started using the name Frisbee.
Morrison died in 2010,
and at his own request he was cremated and had his ashes molded into frisbees for his family!
Something to think about next time your are tossing around a frisbee.
６、フリスビー
今では当たり前のように呼ばれるあの円盤型の投げるおもちゃ。
けれども、これもWham-O toy company
のトレードマーク的な製品の名前です。１９３７年アメリカでフレッドモリソンによって
生まれたこの円盤型の製品、フレッドは
「Flyin-Saucer」(空飛ぶ円盤）と呼んでいましたが
後にフレッドがWham-O toy companyに
権利を売却し、名前が今日のフリスビーとなりました。
モリソンは２０１０年に死去し
土葬が一般的なアメリカにおいて、
彼の遺言にて、遺体は火葬され、その遺灰は
フリスビー型にされ、遺族に配られたのです！
フリスビーを投げる機会があるときには是非思い出してみてください。
（訳者より・・この遺灰をフリスビー型にして受け取った遺族の気持ちはどうなんだろう・・
とブライアンに聞いたところ、「フリスビーだもん。嫌だったら投げればいいんだよ。とのことでした。）
