僕はアメリカ南部、ルイジアナ州で育ちました。
今でも僕の母親は自分が読み終わると「サザンリビング」という雑誌を日本に送ってくれます。
（きれいな写真が多いので妻も喜ぶし、ガーデニングに関する記事も豊富です。教室にはバックナンバーが揃っています。是非実際手に取って読んでみてください）
他のどの国のどの地域でも同じように、僕の出身アメリカ南部でも独特の言い回しが多数あります。
今回はそのアメリカの南部言葉を少し紹介したいと思います。
I grew up in Louisiana, which is in the southern part of the United States. My mother still sends me her Southern Living magazine when she finishes reading it. Like any region of any country, the south of the United States has its own distinct customs and language.
Mr./Mrs
アメリカ南部ではMr./Mrs(ミスター・ミセス)の後にファーストネームを呼ぶのが礼儀正しいとされています。例えば僕の場合はMr.Brian
となるわけです。（南部以外の地域ではMr./Mrsの後にはサーネーム（苗字）で呼ぶのが普通です。僕の場合はMr.Cliftonとなります。）
南部地域より出てこのように他人を呼ぶと、変な人ね、と思われかねません。
For example, in the south it is polite to address someone using Mr./Mrs. and their first name. However, this custom would sound very strange if you used it outside of the southern part of the United States. The following are some words or phrases that are unique to the south of the United States.
Fixin` to
I`m fixin` to go, but I have to finish doing the dishes first.
「今出るところだけど、まずお皿を洗わなくっちゃ。」という意味です。
他の地域の人が「about to-」（－するところだ）という状況でこのfixin` to を使います。
そのままabout to と入れ替えても全く同じ意味になります。
“I`m fixin` to go, but I have to finish doing the dishes first.” Most people in the US would say “about to” in this situation, but down in the south we usually say “fixin` to.”
Reckon
I reckon that it might rain this afternoon.
「今日の午後は雨になると思うよ。」
これはthink と同じ意味です。アメリカ南部とオーストラリアでも広くこのreckonは使われています。
カタカナ発音だと「レコン」という感じです。
（ブライアンはいつも息子に「What do you reckon ?」「それで、どう思う？」と話しかけています。息子は「イエー。」としか今のところ返事をしません。）
“I reckon that it might rain this afternoon.” We use reckon when most people would use the word “think.” I`ve also heard lots of Australians use the word reckon.
Ma`am/Sir
Older Woman: “Do you like your new Spanish teacher?”
High School Student: “Yes ma`am, she`s a nice lady.”
年配の女性「新しいスペイン語の先生はどうかしら？」
高校生「はい。奥様、とても良い先生です。」
南部以外の地域でもこの表現を使うことはありますが、アメリカ南部では（特に子どもが）目上の人、年上の人に接するときの礼儀として非常に重要とされています。
子どもの頃出がけにいつも、「目上の人にあったらちゃんとサー・マアムと言いなさい。」と母親に言い聞かされていたことを思い出します。
Older Woman: “Do you like your new Spanish teacher?”
High School Student: “Yes ma`am, she`s a nice lady.”
People occasionally say ma`am or sir in other parts of America, but it is considered very important in the south. I can`t tell you the number of my times that my mother said “remember to say ma`am and sir” before I left to go somewhere.
Hold your horses
Hold your horses young man! You need to pick up your legos before we go.
「まだだよ！出かける前に床のレゴブロックを拾わなきゃいけないよ。」
辛抱しなさい、待ちなさい、という古い言い回しです。
「まだ馬の手綱をひくのは尚早だよ。」と人々が日常的に車を使うようになる前は文字通りそのままの意味を持っていました。
僕はこの表現をとてもよく使います。
“Hold your horses young man! You need to pick up your legos before we go.”
Here the meaning is to wait or be patient. This is a very old saying, and originally (before people commonly used cars) the meaning was literal. I still use this saying all the time.
Ya`ll
What time are ya`ll going to the party?
「皆さんは何時にパーティーに出かけますか？」
トレードマークのようなアメリカ南部特有の表現です。
you allが短くなっています。カタカナでは「ヤル」という感じに発音します。2人以上の人を指して言います。
ルイジアナ州最大の都市ニューオリンズでは“your mom and them,”
「あなたのママと、その他の人々」という、不明瞭で全くもってわけのわからない(vague)言い方もあります。
これも同じ意味です。
“What time are ya`ll going to the party?”
This is a trademark expression from the American south. Ya`ll is a contraction of “you all,” which is used when there is more than one person. Ya`ll is often used to talk about a vague group of people. In New Orleans, people sometimes use the super-vague “your mom and them,” which has the same meaning.
