Knowing how to open and close an email is a difficult task. You need to have the correct tone, get across the proper meaning and not be redundant (In English—unlike Japanese–it`s very important not to be redundant and say the same thing again—sorry bad joke). Some people leave out greetings and sign-offs altogether, as the email message already says who the email is to and from. However, being able to effectively open and close an email is important if you want to show respect to the person you are contacting, so I thought in today`s blog we could look at email openings and closings.

送り主と受け取り主が既に分かるEメールでは、これらの頭語や結びを省く人も多くいます。
でも、あなたがメールを書いている相手に敬意を表すためには、始めと終わりの挨拶をするのは大事ですね。
今回のブログではEメールの挨拶表現について書いてみようと思います。
Openings
There are far fewer email openings than closings. With both openings and closings you always need to consider the person you are emailing and what their relationship is to you. For a very professional opening people often use Mr. (last name): or Ms. (last name): To be polite we usually use the vague Ms. unless you know that a woman prefers to use Mrs. (used with a married woman). If you want to be a little less formal you could use Dear (first name or last name)– If you are really good friends with someone you could even say Hey Brian— or use the very American Yo Brian—
Closings
All sign-offs need to include your name. For first time contacts you can use your first and last name, and also include other information that might be necessary such as your job title, phone number, etc. After the first email using just your first name should be fine. Here are some common closings:

日本語でいう「拝啓」のような表現ですね。結びの表現よりはるかに数が少ないです。書き出し、結びの両方とも相手との関係性を図ったうえで言葉を選ぶ必要がありますね。
公的で礼儀を重んじるシーンでは始めにMr.(名字)またはMs.(名字)を使います。女性には既婚女性、未婚女性両方に使われるMs.を使用するのが無難です。
それよりも少しフランクなメールの場合はDear(下の名前または名字)、相手が本当に親しい相手の場合には「Hey Brian」と言ってもいいですし、アメリカンな感じを出したければ「Yo Brian」と始めるのもアリです。
英文メールの結びについて
全ての表現の後に自分の名前を入れましょう。
例：Sincerely. Brian
初めてのメールではあなたの名字、または下の名前を使い、その他の事項、業務内容、電話番号などを、二度目からはあなたの下の名前だけ使うようでも構いません。

This closing is unemotional and professional, so it is good for the workplace. You can make it warmer by adding an extra word such as Best Regards, Kind Regards, Warm Regards, etc.
Thank you,/Thank you for your time,
This closing is often used when we ask people to do something for us. It can be used in formal or informal situations.
Sincerely,
This is also used in formal and informal situations, but to me it sounds a bit unnatural in formal situations. Sincerely comes from sincere, which can be translated as 心から in Japanese. With this closing the tone is usually pretty serious.

This is kind of a fun closing used in informal situations.

Ciao isn`t actually English, but this is another fun closing people use in informal situations. In fact, people often use closings from other languages to have a bit of fun.
One thing that you might keep in mind is that people often get very creative with their openings and closings. I`ve seen people use closings like 「Love and rockets」 or「 Keep on rocking in the free world」 Whatever you do, don`t bore people by being redundant or saying the same things over again.

相手に何か依頼する内容のメールの場合は結びにこの表現を用いても良いでしょう。
仕事でもプライベートのフォーマルでないメールでも使えます。

同じように公のメール、プライベートのメール両方で使います。僕は友人同士のメールでSincerelyを使うのは少し違和感を覚えます。日本語では「心から」というような意味です。手紙の結び文句としては「敬具」と訳されます。
真面目できちんとした内容のメールの結びに使われることが多いです。

楽しい感じの結びです。（チアーズは乾杯と言う意味です。）
フォーマルなメールでは使いません。

上ではよく使われる表現を紹介しましたが、独自のユニークな表現を用いて締めくくっているメールも僕はたくさん見てきました。
例えば「Love and rockets」とか（特に意味はないです）
「Keep on rocking in the free world」（ニールヤングの歌のタイトルです）
とか。
とにかく！重複する表現を用いて、同じことを何度も言って相手をうんざりさせないことが大事です。

重複表現は英語の文法ではタブーです。ここで二つのダメ英文の紹介をします。
The pretty girl looked beautiful yesterday.
あのかわいこちゃん、昨日きれいだったなあ。
ということですがprettyとbeautifulはほとんど同じ意味なのでダメなんです。
そしてさらにダメな例。
The difficult test was difficult for the student.
難しいテストは、生徒に難易度が高かった。ということですが、difficultが二回でてきますね。
これはスーパーダメダメ英文だそうです。学校の試験の解答にこれをやると減点されるそうです。
さて、ここでブライアンの原文。
