最近発売されたばかりのiPhone5sと5c,今回は携帯電話についてお話ししようと思います。
(携帯電話はcellphonesと書くこともあれば、
cell phones と2つの単語に分けて書く場合もあります。)
cellphoneはcellular telephoneの短縮です。
それでは携帯電話用語を見ていきましょう。
With the recent launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c,
I thought it would be a good time to talk about cellphones
(sometimes written as two words: cell phones).
Also called mobile phone, cellphone is short for cellular telephone,
as the phone is operated by cellular radio.
Let`s have a look at some cellphone terms.
あなたの携帯電話のプロバイダは何ですか？
僕は今auの携帯電話を使っていますが
ドコモとソフトバンクをお使いの方も多いと思います。
アメリカはVerizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobileがプロバイダ大手です。
Who is your cellphone provider?
Right now my provider is au,
but I know many of you in Japan might also use DoCoMo or SoftBank.
In America some of the big providers are Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

スマートフォンは端的に言うとインターネットに接続できる携帯電話のことですね。
アップル社製のiPhoneか各社製のアンドロイドに二分されています。

A smartphone is simply a cellphone that has internet access.
Smartphones are usually divided into iPhones, made by Apple, and Android phones,
which have a few different makers. Do you have a preference?
People are often very loyal to one or the other.
One nice thing about smartphones are all the useful apps that you can upload onto your phone.
My favorite app is called Japanese—it is a dictionary that also lets you study kanji.
家に固定電話はありますか？
固定電話のことはlandlineと呼び携帯電話と区別します。
充電切れで携帯電話が使えないときにlandlineを使うことになりますね。
そんな時英語ではdead「死亡した」という単語を使います。
ちょっとオーバーな表現のような気がしますが長く充電せず切れてしまった時には
cellphone battery is dead.と言います。
Do you also have a phone at your house?
If you do we usually call this a landline to distinguish it from a cell phone.
You might have to use your landline if your cellphone battery is dead.
I know it sounds dramatic,
but this is the word we use if you haven`t charged your battery in a long time.
とまあここまで携帯電話の用語についていろいろ話しましたが
最後にちょっとした秘密を打ち明けます。
ネイティブイングリッシュスピーカーは
大抵携帯電話のことをcellphoneと呼ばず、ただphoneと呼ぶことが多いです。
僕が毎朝のように目覚めの後、
「Where is my phone?」
「僕の携帯どこ？」と妻に聞くように。
Now that you have learned all of these fancy words related to cellphones,
let me let you in on a little secret.
For the most part,
native English speakers just say the word “phone” when talking about their cellphone.
On many mornings I have woken up and asked my wife “Where is my phone?”
