Here`s a question that I often get asked by my students: “What does lol mean?” Computers, smart phones and social networks are drastically changing the way that we live our lives. For better or worse, the English language has also changed as technology has progressed. Here are some common phrases and acronyms that you might come across on the internet or in a cell phone text message that you might not find in a dictionary.
1) Lol
This is an acronym for laugh out loud. It is always typed/written and never spoken. Typically people type it in response to something funny. The ironic thing is that people usually don`t actually laugh out loud when they type it.
2) Omg
This is an acronym for oh my god. Again, this as always typed/written and never spoken. It is very common for people to say “oh my god,” but the acronym is not spoken. This is used (and some would say overused) when someone is surprised/shocked about something.
3) App
This term is slightly different in Japanese and English. App is the English shortened version of application. I know that in katakana this word is アプリ, but if you said that to a native English speaker they would be likely to be confused. App is spoken and typed/written.
4) Lmao
This is an acronym for laughing my ass off. Again, this is typed when something is funny, and it has a little stronger meaning than lol. There is another acronym connected to this one, roflmao (rolling on the floor laughing my ass off), which is reserved for only the funniest situations. These acronyms are typed/written and never spoken.
5) www
What are these strange letters you always see on the top part of your computer? They are an acronym for world wide web. The world wide web was developed by British CERN scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Oh, and when you pronounce “www.” it sounds like “double u, double u, double u, dot.”
These are just a few of many phrases and acronyms that have worked their way into the English language recently. English, like all things, is constantly changing. I`m sure that soon I`ll read something that I don`t understand on the internet and have to ask my son about it.
近頃、生徒さんから「Lol」ってどんな意味ですか？とよく聞かれます。
知っていますか？
これはインターネット上で非常によく使われているスラングですが、辞書にはのっていません。
今日、コンピュータ、スマートフォン、ソーシャルネットワークが人々の社会生活を変えるスピードの早さはすごいものがありますね。
良いか悪いかは別として、テクノロジーの進歩は英語を絶えず変えてきました。
今回のエントリーでは変化した、そしてし続ける言葉についてお話ししようと思います。
それでは、良く使われるフレーズや頭文字を紹介していきます。
あなたも明日ネット上でこれらの言葉を見かけるかもしれません！
１、「Lol」
Laugh out loud の頭文字です。
書き言葉、もしくはタイプして使います。話し言葉では使いません。
（「エルオーエル」と口に出して言ってはだめですよ！）
これは「面白い！」「笑える！」という表現です。
大笑いという意味ですが、文章の最後にLol とつけるので（笑）という感じで使われていることが多いようです。
（日本の最新ネットスラングだと「爆笑（ばくわら）」かな？）
フェイスブックなどでよくLolと書いている人を見かけますが書いている本人は
っていることはほとんどないのが皮肉なところです。
２、「Omg」
Oh my god の頭文字です。
こちらも書き言葉のみ、話し言葉では使いません。
「オーマイガッ！」というのは日常とてもよくつかわれる表現ですがオーエムジーと
口に出して言うことはありませんのでご注意を。
驚いたり、ショックなことがあったりしたときに使います。
（ちょっとみんな安易に使いすぎじゃない？という人もいます。仮にも
「ゴッド（神）」が単語内に入っているんだから・・・ということです。）
３、App
application(アプリケーション)のショートバージョンです。
片仮名では「アプリ」といいますね。
でもネイティブイングリッシュスピーカーに「アプリ」と言っても通じません。
App は話し言葉、書き言葉の両方に使います。
４、Lmao
Laughing my ass off の頭文字です。
面白い、という時に使います。前述のLolより強い感じです。
日本語に何と訳したら良いのかわからなかったので調べたところ
「テラワロス」と出ました。Lol (←このように使います)
ちなみに、テラワロスとはーもともと「笑える」の意味で使われていた「ワロス」に
国際単位系における接頭辞で一兆倍を意味する「テラ」をつけて
「超ウケル」という意味になったそうです。勉強になりますねー。
Lmaoに類するものとしてRoflmaoというものもあります。
lolling on the floor laughing my ass off の略です。
Rolling on the floor というのは「床を転げまわる」ということなので
それくらい笑えるということですね。
ほんとーーうにおもしろすぎるときにしかこの表現は使えません。
この二つは書き、話し言葉として使われます。
５、www.
スクリーンの上にいつもあるこの三つのwはいったいなんでしょう？
World wide web の頭文字です。
欧州原子核共同研究所のイギリス人科学者サー・ティム・バーナーズリー
によって開発されました。
「ダブユ ダブユ ダブユ ドッ」という感じで発音してみてください！
以上少しですが新しいインターネットスラングのお話でした。
物事の変わるスピードに追い付いていくのが大変です。
僕もそのうち息子（三歳）に「これなんていう意味？」と若者の最新用語に
ついて尋ねるようになるのでしょう・・・。
